Why does body shaming needs to be addressed?
Body shaming is a very serious issue. It can be extremely subtle yet make a substantial impact on how anybody feels about themselves. Body shaming can lead to major insecurities and grave eating disorders. Body shaming can come from the smallest comments and look to simply seeing only a certain body type being seen as ideal. Whether or not we recognize it the media can control how a whole generation of people can feel. From magazine cover, to simple Instagram memes it all can have a vast impact to the society. When people lack the confidence they need to love themselves the path to self harming is easier and does not seem like a consequential thing. The fact that our small group of four individuals have gone through direct and indirect body shaming numerous times demonstrated the severeness of this social issue. Preteens and teenagers all go through a difficult stage when and before hitting puberty. This makes everything they go through more burdensome and more severe. when they see the impossible expectations that preteens and teenagers feel the need to fulfill it can cause very low self esteem. It can burst their beautiful young bubble of confidence. Body shaming is a very hard thing to overcome especially so young. When your are from the ages of 11-18 you go through a lot and it body shaming would just put you in an uncomfortable situation among yourself all the time. one study show that up to 94% of teenage girls have been body shamed and up to 64% of teenage boys have been body shamed. It is time to put an end to all these mishaps. Gaffney, Katelyn J., "Negative effects that Social Media causes on Body Imaging" (2017).
